What’s New and Cool With Togal AI Takeoff? AI for Drywall!

Quantities Takeoff Leader Togal Plans Dive Into Drywall AI, Other Verticals
Artificial intelligence (AI) for construction has tremendous potential. AI can consume multiple project variables more quickly and accurately than a person, identify risk, optimize schedules, even automate equipment through machine vision. But one of the earliest and now most mature processes addressed by multiple, emerging offerings is quantities takeoff for estimating.
Togal.ai was an early entrant to this market, and I first debriefed them on the product back in 2023 … and while reducing the number of hours a human would need to complete takeoff from a plan set, accuracy was also a key selling point.
“One of our investors has a glazing business,” Togal.AI original co-founder Patrick Hughes said in that article. “He won a bid and realized he was over $1 million low on his numbers. Why was he $1 million low? It turns out he missed an entire floor on the takeoff. He invested in Togal.AI both as an investor and as a user confident that it will be a lot cheaper than missing an entire floor and losing another million.”
Other companies have now entered the market. Procore has its own embedded AI takeoff, beefed up with acquisitions including INDUS.AI and Avata. STACK Construction has automated takeoff, with a focus on trades. Emerging vendors including Zetane, aimed at generals, and Patabid, aimed at mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors, have viable proprietary offerings, built on their own deterministic AI technology, in the market. Others, including Plangrep, prepare construction data for ingestion by large language models (LLMs) to support various use cases including quantities takeoff.
But Togal is not standing still, and on an August 2026 briefing, Togal Head of Customer Success Michael Seni gave us a rundown of what is new, cool and upcoming in the product. Seni came to Togal from a customer organization, and we found his insights, since he’s been on the customer side and the vendor side, invaluable.
“Togal has changed greatly,” Seni said. “I joined the team three years ago, back in 2023, and I can tell you we're completely different takeoff software than we were originally.”
As we delved deeper into the briefing, Seni’s enthusiastic statement proved accurate. There’s a lot going on—and all of it will help more and more diverse contractors drive AI into their takeoff processes.
What Togal Does
As the term “AI takeoff” implies, Togal and products in this category consume plan sets and RFIs and extract quantities of materials, surface areas, doors, windows and other construction estimates to underpin estimating. This would otherwise have to be done manually, which is time-consuming and prone to costly error.
“Togal itself is a complete stream of doing your takeoff,” Seni said. “We have different AI models helping you along the way. It's a journey. It's not just one stop process.”
Apart from capturing quantities, Togal offers broad takeoff functionality, and can support the process even without AI, for those intent on working manually. But the application offers an enterprise-grade, multi-user environment that centralizes project information in a way that multiple users can work simultaneously.
Togals core capabilities are to:
Identify the plan’s scale, which must be confirmed by a human user to prevent plan-wide errors, making it a strong choice for contractors working with architectural layouts and building contractors
Count objects including doors, plumbing fixtures, furniture and appliances
Capture quantities including room net area, slab footprint and gross/buildable area, including wall centerline, wall perimeter and door centerline measurements
Search drawing text/tags and converts them into counts like steel members or electrical/mechanical tags using an example image to find matching objects/symbols on a drawing
Since our last briefing though, Togal users have gained an impressive array of efficiency improvements, plus extensive capabilities to configure the software for specific subverticals.
New Features, AI for Drywall Contractors
After all, thoughtful AI like Togal and other purpose-built construction AI have been around for a while. Togal and to a large extent others offer the ability to extend the tool with user-generated content. Togal users can, for instance, assign AI-generated polygons with quantities to their own classifications and then extract up to eight quantities from a single AI-generated polygon. Custom formulas in Togal can now convert takeoff quantities into calculated material or work requirements. Custom data fields let Togal customers create project-specific properties and metadata—the “data about the data” that among other things can make a data set more usable by AI.
But one thing I’ve learned from various settings where enterprise software gives users great flexibility is that starting with a blank slate can be daunting. So it’s not surprising that Togal is building deeper for a number of verticals including AI takeoff for drywall contractors, and apparently others.
Seni said that the first of these to be released broadly to market will probably be aimed at drywall contractors, and will ingest drawing wall schedules to identify wall tags and calculate linear footage, including assemblies that calculate component cost for studs, drywall sheets and insulation.
BOTTOM LINE: Ries and Trout would tell you that being first in market is an advantage, but is not as important as being first in mind. Togal is probably doing well on the latter measure, and with growing complement of functionality is well-positioned to be a takeoff partner of choice for more and more contractors. According to VerticalIQ, there are almost 20,000 drywall specialty contractors in the United States, with perhaps another 28,000 individual owner/operators.
On top of that, a certain number of general contractors will also self-perform drywall. This indicates Togal has identified a trade discipline likely to make the most of their investment in labor. We see a bevvy of new offerings coming to market, but time-in-market in Togal’s case translates into product maturity. Sometimes, we use the term “mature” as a polite way of saying a product is dated. But in this case it means that the product is full-featured. This comes from continuing use, input from users and continuing investment. Contractors should probably consider this as they select a vendor in this category, and also watch for enhancements for their sub-specialty.
